COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Soon after Bob HuDock moved to Bay Ridge, he started attending every community board meeting until he became a member of Community Board 10. He’s involved in the zoning committee of CB10, because of the alignment with his professional experience in architecture, and the transportation committee, in order to advocate for safer streets and bicycle paths, and continue to improve pedestrian safety. HuDock is chair of the board’s environmental committee and the vice president of the PTA at his daughter Katia’s school, PS 503 where has been trying to get the high percentage of immigrant parents to be “fully integrated members of society.”

PERSONAL LIFE: HuDock is a worldly man. He has travelled around the world and lived in many places such as Memphis, San Diego, Honolulu and Japan. He studied in the University of Pittsburgh and attended the school of Architecture of the University of Miami. However, after having lived in New York City for 22 years, he finally settled down in Bay Ridge. “[I] never really got the chance to get established,” HuDock said.

He and his wife bought their first home in the neighborhood, stating that he decided to stay in the area due to the “sense of community” found in Bay Ridge, which he believes is hard to find in other communities in Brooklyn. He has a love for music and plays the guitar every day. “[Music is] something that brings so much joy to my life,” he explained.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: HuDock and his wife struggled to have children for many years. They finally conceived and were thrilled to know that they were expecting twins. However, the girls were born prematurely, and spent some time in the ICU. Only one of them made it. “Every day we went to visit them,” HuDock recalled. “[She was} so young, so full of potential.” HuDock had a vision of what the tiny baby would be, and suddenly it was all swept away. “It makes you a more serious person,” he said.

INSPIRATION: “My father worked his way out of a coal mine. Even though he never went to college, he had the motivation to bring himself out and become successful and respected.” HuDock’s father worked as a commercial pilot, and inspired him to find a career that he would love. “It will never feel like work,” his father told him. HuDock’s father’s love of flying taught him to never settle for a profession that would just pay the bills.

CAREER: HuDock has an architecture office that he runs from home. “[My] architecture work is always ongoing,” he remarked. HuDock plans to continue work as an architect, and build his professional business.”
