Weiner’s Still A Contender — On Paper, That Is
BROOKLYN — A press release yesterday from the city’s Campaign Finance Board, “Candidates File Disclosures With Campaign Finance Board,” reveals some surprises.
The statement shows the candidates in citywide elections who have filed required campaign finance disclosure statements with the board by the Tuesday deadline.
The statement said that three candidates so far have filed for the mayoral contest in 2013. One, no surprise, is former Comptroller Bill Thompson, a former Brooklyn deputy borough president. Another, about whom there is very little information, is named He G. Lee.
The third name, however, raises some eyebrows. It’s that of Anthony Weiner, the former Brooklyn-Queens congressman who resigned in the wake of a “sexting” scandal.
A spokesman for the Campaign Finance Board told the Eagle that Weiner’s candidacy was filed in 2010, before the scandal, but his latest disclosure statement came as recently as last week.
“As long as he still has a campaign committee that has some activity and he hasn’t declared that he’s not a candidate, he’s still on the list,” said the spokesman. Of course, this has nothing do with how active the committee is. Indeed, on Anthony Weiner’s blog, anthonyweiner. com, the last entry was made in May 2011.
Elsewhere in the statement, it should be no surprise to any follower of Brooklyn politics that Carlo Scissura, senior adviser to Borough President Marty Markowitz, has declared his candidacy for borough president for the 2013 election.
Running again for City Council in 2013 are some familiar Brooklyn incumbents, including Sara Gonzalez (D-Red Hook/ Sunset Park), Dr. Mathieu Eugene (D-Flatbush), Steve Levin (D-Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO) and Jumaane Williams (D-East Flatbush).
