ASK THE DA: Celebrating the Family Justice Center
I recently had the pleasure of acknowledging the sixthsuccessful anniversary of the first Family Justice Center in thecity. The Family Justice Center is located on the 15th floor of myoffice’s headquarters at 350 Jay Street. The center combines theservices of various government, community and non-profit agenciesto make it easier for domestic violence victims to get all the helpthat they need in one location.
The center is a safe, welcoming environment where victims andfamilies affected by domestic violence can access a wide array ofservices including counseling; legal information on immigration andfamily court matters, including how to obtain orders of protection;access to shelter and housing; assistance in filing police reports;safety planning, and services for the elderly and disabled.
Additionally, language translators are available, as is achildren’s room to provide on-site childcare for mothers who bringtheir children with them. Moreover, spiritual support from variousreligious groups is available. The center also assists familieswith addressing long-term needs such as housing, English as asecond language education and counseling.
