Defendant sentenced for assault on Brooklyn correctional counselor
Late last week, Brooklyn Federal Court Judge Edward R. Korman sentenced Ronald G. Atkinson for the assault of a correctional counselor while he was incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Atkinson, 40, was arrested in 2009 on charges of bank robberies in Las Vegas and Manhattan. Detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center subsequent to his arrest and pending trial, Atkinson brutally attacked a correctional counselor, striking the counselor repeatedly in the head. The counselor suffered a broken nose, broken bones under his eye and two slipped discs in his neck, in addition to residual and continuing pains including post-traumatic stress disorder.
Because the Federal Bureau of Prisons operates the Metropolitan Detention Center, the attack on the counselor was a federal offense on a federal employee.
