SUNSET PARK — "As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view."

A giant, century-old marquee spelling out “HOTEL A giant, century-old marquee spelling out “HOTEL ST. GEORGE” crashed to the sidewalk at 100 Henry St. in Brooklyn Heights at roughly 7:08 a.m. Sunday morning, bringing an emergency response by several city agencies and shutting down the Clark Street 2 and 3 subway station.

The marquee, measuring roughly 10 by 20 feet, overhung the main entrance to the station.

Miraculously, no one was standing under the overhang at the moment it collapsed — but it could have been far worse, said Julio Davila, the superintendent at Cadman Towers HDFC across the street.

The building, which lies between Cadman Plaza West and Clinton Street, was evacuated as crowds gathered on the sidewalk across the street.

Two firefighters and one civilian suffered minor injuries, according to an FDNY spokesperson. The building’s offices and the main stairwell had filled with thick smoke, shaken building tenants told the Brooklyn Eagle.

A senior citizen is beautifying a small area in Su A senior citizen is beautifying a small area in Sunset Park with his passion for gardening.

Sam Oh, 65, is known by many locals as Sam “The Green Thumb Man.”

Oh has been planting and maintaining several gardens for a year and a half. He grew up in Korea, where neighbors did their best to help each other keep the area clean.

“We would clean around the villages and the schools. It’s a long tradition in Korea,” Oh said. “Old neighbors would chip in some money in the spring and buy some flowers and trees. The kids grow up and do the same thing. It goes from generation to generation.”

Oh wanted to bring that culture to Brooklyn, and for the last year and a half, he has done just that — starting at 5 a.m. on most days.

After 1840, the neighborhood developed into a center for shipbuilding and became known as the birthplace of the famous ironclad Civil War ship, the Monitor.
