GAZA — It’s children, from both sides, who always suffer the most collateral damage: Palestinian children wounded in the Israeli bombardment on a residential building in Bureij refugee camp, are treated at al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, late Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

The hospital has been in the midst of the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war almost eight months ago, the hospital has run out of fuel multiple times.

Meanwhile, international efforts to stop the bloodshed have been bolstered by the latest nation to declare it would recognize a state of Palestine. Slovenia, a central European country across the Adriatic Sea from Italy on Wednesday, June 5, joined Ireland, Norway and Spain in recognizing Palestine.

Slovenia’s prime minister, Robert Golob, said it accelerated the declaration in response to sped-up efforts to recognize the State of Palestine in reaction to Israel’s increasing foray into the southern Gaza city of Rafah. However, Slovenia’s legislative assembly must first pass the measure.

NORMANDY — On the same beach, 80 years later, recalling the bloodiest day of WWII: American WWII veteran Bill Wall throws roses into the water during a wreath-laying ceremony at Utah Beach, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Utah Beach, Normandy. World War II veterans from across the United States, as well as Britain and Canada, are in Normandy this week to mark 80 years since the D-Day landings that helped lead to Hitler’s defeat.

The amphibious June 6, 1944 assault on the beaches of Normandy was the first stage of Operation Overlord, and the location and nature of the mission were kept a secret.

Resistance fighters also bombed communications centers in Nazi-occupied France to prevent Hitler’s forces from being able to respond quickly. They also sabotaged the transportation system, such as trains.

FLORENCE — Staying in the spotlight — and the courthouse, while the press herds: Amanda Knox arrives at the Florence courtroom in Florence, Italy, Wednesday, June 5, 2024. Amanda Knox returns to an Italian courtroom Wednesday for the first time in more than 12 1⁄2 years to clear herself “once and for all” of a slander charge that stuck even after she was exonerated in the brutal 2007 murder of her British roommate in the idyllic hilltop town of Perugia. However, on Wednesday, an appellate court in Florence upheld the slander conviction, in which she falsely accused Patrick Lumumba, the owner of a local bar where she once worked, of the murder, claiming that police coerced her to do so, according to CNN. The accusation cost Lumumba his livelihood, his bar and his ability to reside in Italy.

Knox will not have to serve time for the slander conviction.
