Columbian Lawyers Association of Brooklyn will kick off fall season tonight with meeting

The Columbian Lawyers Association of Brooklyn will host a CLE-accredited dinner meeting tonight at Gargiulo’s Restaurant, 2911 West 15th St. Guest speaker that night, according to Inn Administrator Lucy DiSalvo, will be Lawrence D. Moringiello, Esq.

The presentation is titled “Real Estate 2019 – Beyond the Contract and the Title Report and Overview of FIRPTA, FIN CEN and DFS Regulations 206 and 208.” 

Participants will receive CLE credit of one hour in the area of professional practice. Reservations are required; call 718-288-1130.

This year the association is led by President Susanne Gennusa. 

Coincidentally, this is a year during which “Women in Law: Champions of Justice” will be honored at an event sponsored by the Brooklyn Eagle to be held Oct. 22 at the prestigious Water Club in Manhattan. 

“This is the first time women who practice in the courts and those who take on the vital operational duties in our local legal system will be singled out for their singular roles,” a spokesperson said.

While the official list of honorees has yet to be released, it’s likely the spotlight will focus, at least in part, on those in roles of leadership – either as lawyers or court administrators, the spokesperson said.

Surely the women who have headed the Columbian Lawyers Association through the years are worthy of recognition at this event, including Maria C. Marnello, Ann M. Maresca, Janet A. Albano, Annette M. Scarano, Concetta I. Mennella, RoseAnn C. Branda and Linda LoCascio.

 Kings Inn women leaders in ‘champion’ spotlight

The Kings County Nathan R. Sobel Inn of Court membership will gather on Oct. 10 for its first fall session. It should be noted that this organization – headed this year by attorney Joseph Rosato – has been led by a number of outstanding women over the years, including its administrators, formerly Marie Lattanzi and now the aforementioned DiSalvo. 

Distinguished past Inn presidents include Victoria Lombardi-Bodnar, Andrea Bonina and Helene Blank.

 Bay Ridge Lawyers install Mary Ann Stathopoulos as president, prepare for Oct. 5 ‘Light the Night Walk’

For several years the Bay Ridge Lawyers Association, inspired by former President Lisa Becker, has taken part in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Light the Night Walk.” This year, we’re advised by longtime BRLA member and former Kings County Justice Beth Bonina, will be no different.

That is, except for one major item: last Wednesday evening the BRLA installed Mary Ann Stathopoulos as its new president. She succeeds Joseph Vasile, who did an excellent job steering this legal ship of law, which has been sailing for almost 65 years!

Stathopoulos is solidly grounded in local law, spending valuable years with veteran attorney Larry Giardina, and has recently taken an impressive position with an international organization.

“On behalf of BRLA Past President Lisa Becker, it is that time of year again for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s ‘Light the Night Walk,” Hon. Bonina announced. “This year, the walk is scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. This year, the walk will be held at the Great Lawn at the College of Staten Island, located at 2800 Victory Blvd. The actual walk starts at 7 p.m. sharp.”

A number of notable Bay Ridge lawyers will be showing up that night to support colleague Becker and her noteworthy cause. 

‘Recent Court Decisions & Appeals’ a welcome addition to our ‘legal’ Eagle

Over the past several weeks, Brooklyn Eagle readers – especially those of us in the legal community –have been pleased to note the addition of the “Recent Court Decisions & Appeals” feature, authored expertly by C.B. Abruzzese.

As a professional writer and adjunct professor, her reviews make solid reading for lawyers and lay members of the community, imparting a certain “law journal” effect. Free of some of the legal jargon that some of us tend to overuse from time to time, Abruzzese’s reports offer a valued clarity that all readers can appreciate. 

It’s about time someone highlighted the decisions and observations of the jurists before whom so many of us practice on a regular basis. Kudos to all involved!
