Nechemya Weberman, an Hasidic religious counselor in Brooklyn’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community, will be sentenced in Brooklyn on Tuesday for sexually abusing a young Williamsburg girl for years, starting at age 12.

After coming forward, the girl, now 18, and her family were the targets of a coordinated  intimidation effort. More than 1,000 Hasidic men raised $500,000 for Weberman’s legal defense before the trial.

During the trial,  two Weberman supporters were arrested for illegally taking a picture of the victim with cell phones while she was on the stand, and emailing it out. The girl was called a slut and a troublemaker; members of her family were also harassed. Following Weberman’s conviction, a Hasidic rabbi who campaigns against the sexual abuse of children was attacked in Williamsburg by a man who threw bleach in his face.

Weberman was convicted on December 10 of 59 counts, including sustained sex abuse of a child, endangering the welfare of a child and sexual abuse. He faces 25 years in prison on the top charge.

The New York Daily News reported on Sunday that Weberman allegedly violated at least 10 other girls.

Weberman invoked Kabbalah — a type of Jewish mysticism — to convince his victims that having sex with him was “kosher,” the News reports.
