Brooklynite’s ‘Truth in Advertising’ now out in paperback
Brooklyn BookBeat: Author to speak in Bay Ridge
When we think of the advertising business, many of us conjure an outdated Mad Men-like scene, replete with dark drama fueled by a constant supply of alcohol. Certainly, advertising today can be sexy – but day-to-day, is it really as fascinating as we imagine?
Earlier this year we featured Brooklyn writer John Kenney, whose debut novel “Truth in Advertising” (Touchstone) explores the life of a modern day advertising professional. Kenney, who has worked in the field for nearly two decades, draws upon his own experience and reveals a contemporary advertising world that is, for the most part, far removed from the drama and sex portrayed in Mad Men. Through his fictional character Finbar Dolan, Kenney offers a candid and humorous vision of what it truly means to be an advertising professional, delving not only into Dolan’s professional life, but also the inevitable complications of romance and family relationships.
To celebrate the novel’s paperback release, the author will speak in Brooklyn on Oct. 17 at Bay Ridge’s BookMark Shoppe. In anticipation, we’ve revisited the conversation we had with Kenney when his book debuted in January. He shared with the Brooklyn Eagle his thoughts on being a first time novelist, and told us how he wound up in Brooklyn Heights.
