BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Following a fiery crash that took the life of Shanti Joyner, 18, in Cobble Hill early Friday morning, police set up a checkpoint late Monday at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Court Street, across the avenue from where the incident took place.
Officers from the 84th Precinct told the Brooklyn Eagle that the temporary checkpoint was set up to remind drivers to proceed cautiously along treacherous Atlantic Avenue.
Both drivers involved in the crash — Kashawn Croswell, 25, and the victim’s sister, Iesha Joyner, 32 — were arrested. Croswell was found to be driving recklessly and leaving the scene of an accident, among other charges, and Joyner was found to be driving while intoxicated and driving without insurance, among other charges.
Residents and community organizations have complained for years about the dangerous stretch, which functions as a highway despite cutting through pedestrian-heavy neighborhoods filled with local shops and restaurants.
“Brooklyn’s ‘Main Street’ is a place for creative merchants and wonderful restaurants. Unfortunately it’s a truck route with large trucks, a traffic nightmare much of the day and a dangerous speedway at night,” Howard Kolins, president of the Boerum Hill Association told the Eagle.

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view.”

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — ‘A miracle that no one was killed …’ That’s what neighbors are saying about the collapse of the Hotel St. George marquee. Shown in this photograph are workmen beginning the removal and repair of the historic, old neon sign at the corner, referencing a relic of Brooklyn Heights’ past: the St. George Hotel.

ATLANTIC AVENUE — Exhausted shopper with cluster of bags and goods from mall at Boerum Place stops to look at huge construction site across the street. “Is that REALLY going to be a jail??” Her male companion is reassuring, “Nothing like Rikers … this is 21st Century.”
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Overheard in line at one of most popular pastry outlets on Montague Street: “Hope I can get them into a camp …” A mother with two pre-schoolers in tow was showing a friend the Dodge Y flyer for Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 18.
