STATEWIDE – THE NISSAN MOTOR Assurance Company will provide refunds for all New Yorkers who were unfairly overcharged for leased vehicles, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Wednesday.
An earlier Office of the Attorney General investigation found that 15 Nissan dealerships added junk fees or falsified the buyout prices of leased vehicles, forcing customers to pay higher costs. Those dealerships paid $1 million in penalties and refunded more than $4.5 million to over 3,100 consumers.
This new agreement will provide refunds for anyone overcharged at any of the 45 New York Nissan dealerships that were not part of the initial settlements. Consumers who took out loans financed by NMAC to pay inflated prices will be refunded the extra interest. The settlement also requires NMAC to change its business processes.
The OAG opened its investigation after Nissan customers reported they were being overcharged for end-of-lease buyouts. Consumers leased cars under an agreement that let them purchase it for a set amount after the lease ended. However, when they tried to buy the cars, the dealerships substantially overcharged them, adding fees or inflating prices on invoices.
Victims do not need to take any action. NMAC will mail checks on a rolling basis throughout 2026 as it audits all dealerships statewide. Consumers affected by deceptive or fraudulent lease practices can file complaints online.
