SHEEPSHEAD BAY – TWO POLICE OFFICERS were injured on Saturday while trying to break up a drag-racing “street takeover” in Sheepshead Bay, the Daily News reports.
The incident occurred at around 3 a.m., when the officers were summoned to Knapp Street and Avenue W by reports of cars speeding and doing donuts. When they attempted to arrest one of the participants, their patrol car was struck by a dark-colored BMW with no plates. A passenger then exited the BMW and slashed the patrol car’s tires before getting back into the car, which then drove away. The officers were brought to a hospital for treatment.
The council is currently considering a bill that would establish a NYPD unit to handle rowdy street gatherings, which involve large numbers of cars meeting up to speed around neighborhoods and have led to injuries in the past.
