STATEWIDE — NEW YORK WILL RECEIVE MORE THAN $185.2 MILLION in Environmental Protection Agency funding to protect the state’s drinking water from exposure to lead, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., announced on Thursday.
A member of the Senate Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee, Gillibrand announced the funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that former President Joe Biden signed in 2021. The money will be applied directly to New York state through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, a federal-state partnership that provides low-cost financial assistance to help communities upgrade public water infrastructure. This fund offers subsidized loans and grants to replace aging pipes, treat contaminants and improve public health.
Earlier this week, Gillibrand also announced more than $40.5 million in federal funding to combat per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances contamination in New York’s potable water. This funding will support testing and infrastructure projects that address PFAS and other emerging contaminants.
