PARK SLOPE — THE PARK SLOPE FIFTH AVENUE BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT, in partnership with WXY Architecture and Urban Design, released on Thursday a strategic vision that reimagines Fifth Avenue as a safer, more vibrant and people-centered corridor. The plan, “Putting People First on Park Slope’s Fifth Avenue — A Vision for the Public Realm,” was made possible through a community grant from New York-Presbyterian Hospital and was developed through an extensive community engagement process. The BID and WXY identified six major goals for the visioning plan that includes wider sidewalks, reducing conflicts and danger between pedestrians and other modes of transportation at intersections, decreasing traffic congestion for buses, enhancing green space and water management infrastructure, and maintaining Fifth Avenue’s character in a way that supports local business.
The New York City Department of Transportation has already received the report to implement its part of the plan, the BID Executive Director Joanna Tallantire told the Brooklyn Eagle. David Vega-Barachowitz from WXY added in an email, “NYC DOT was a collaborative partner and stakeholder during the visioning process and will continue to advance the work through a Street Improvement Project planning process that kicked off this fall.”

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view.”

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — ‘A miracle that no one was killed …’ That’s what neighbors are saying about the collapse of the Hotel St. George marquee. Shown in this photograph are workmen beginning the removal and repair of the historic, old neon sign at the corner, referencing a relic of Brooklyn Heights’ past: the St. George Hotel.

ATLANTIC AVENUE — Exhausted shopper with cluster of bags and goods from mall at Boerum Place stops to look at huge construction site across the street. “Is that REALLY going to be a jail??” Her male companion is reassuring, “Nothing like Rikers … this is 21st Century.”
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Overheard in line at one of most popular pastry outlets on Montague Street: “Hope I can get them into a camp …” A mother with two pre-schoolers in tow was showing a friend the Dodge Y flyer for Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 18.
