CITYWIDE — NEW YORK CITY IS UNDER A DROUGHT WATCH, according to the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and alerts from Notify NYC. The latest alert, dispatched at 12:03 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, asks New Yorkers to “take action to reduce water usage,” such as reporting open fire hydrants and leaks to 311; only flushing toilets when necessary and taking briefer showers; not running the tap during such activities as shaving or brushing teeth and running appliances only when full or using shorter cycles. The DEP also asks residents to fix leaky faucets and pipes. A full list of water conservation measures is available on the DEP website.
According to data from the National Weather Service, measured rainfall for 2024 at Central Park was available only through March. Severe thunderstorms swept much of the Northeast during August and September. The highest precipitation for 2024 thus far was in March, with January and August also seeing heavy rain from storm systems. But late September and October saw mostly dry and sunny weather.
