THE LEDE: Happy Monday, Brooklyn! Mayor de Blasio supports repealing the Cabaret Law, NYC students aren’t getting sex-ed, and ICE officers continue to pester immigrants in Brooklyn’s courts. Plus, we remember the late journalist David Carr, Hurricane Jose could hit New England by Wednesday, and Trevor Noah will be the host of “The Daily Show” through 2022. Finally, a kangaroo escapes in Wisconsin, a spacecraft crashes into Saturn, and there’s not a single person on Barbuda. Have a great week.

~RACIST, HOMOPHOBIC ANTI-DANCING LAW HAS GOT TO GO, SAYS DE BLASIO ADMIN: The Cabaret Law, referred to by many as the “anti-dancing law,” was created in 1926 and prohibits dancing by three or more people in any “room, place or space in the city,” to which the public may gain admission and includes “musical entertainment, singing, dancing or other form[s] of amusement.” For months, Councilmember Rafael Espinal has fought to repeal this law, and at a Consumer Affairs Committee meeting on Thursday, his campaign finally got the backing of Mayor Bill de Blasio. “The Cabaret Law, with its infamous racist and homophobic history, has horrible effects to this day,” wrote NYC Artist Coalition in a statement. “… Social dancing is not a crime.” Espinal added, “We aren’t in a small conservative town in Kansas, this is New York City, a sanctuary city where you shouldn’t need a license to dance. Dancing and free expression is a vital part of our cultural identity.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~NYC STUDENTS AREN’T GETTING SEX ED REQUIRED BY LAW: A study conducted by NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer shows that city schools have been failing to provide many middle and high school students with basic sex education courses as required by state law. The paucity of sex education seems especially acute in middle school, where just over half of students received their mandated semester of health education. The report also says that health education teachers in charge of sex education classes may not be up to speed. Only 7.6 percent of them received professional development related to sexual health education over the last two years. A penny spent on sex ed today may save a pound of trouble further down the line, observers say. The new report comes as STI rates and sexual risk behaviors appear to be ticking up among teenagers. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~ICE SEEN IN BROOKLYN COURTS DESPITE CALLS TO STAY OUT:Following the election of President Donald Trump it had become a normal occurrence for ICE officers to be seen arresting undocumented immigrants in local courts. However, reports had become relatively quiet since Acting District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman held a press conference and called upon ICE to stay out of New York courts last month. That ended on Thursday when an attorney from Brooklyn Defender Services reported seeing ICE agents inside the Brooklyn Criminal Court located at 120 Schermerhorn St. According to a Gothamist article, three plain-clothed ICE arrested four people. “Public trust in our justice system is broken when immigration enforcement operates in or near court locations,” said Councilmember Carlos Menchaca. “People who fear for their personal safety avoid reporting crimes, participating in investigations, and entering courts.”(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~JUDGE SAYS HALT DACA DEADLINE: With the renewal deadline for DACA recipients quickly approaching and President Trump’s deal on the status of Dreamers up in the air, a Brooklyn federal judge said it’s best to throw that deadline away. Judge Nicholas Garaufis of Brooklyn’s federal court encouraged government lawyers to rethink the Oct. 5 date that will bring about 154,000 Dreamers rushing to reapply. Protesters and lawyers gathered at the Borough Hall steps and in front of the federal courthouse to rally against the federal decision, including Martin Batalla Vidal, a 26-year-old DACA recipient and his legal team. “I’m in limbo, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Batalla Vidal said. (via the Daily News)

~VANDALS CUT INTERNET TO BROOKLYN AND QUEENS: Waves of Brooklyn and Queens residents went into work on Friday only to see a pestering symbol on their devices showing that the internet was out. Spectrum said that vandals attacked their fiber-optic network, causing thousands to lose internet for a few hours. The network in Brooklyn was damaged in the morning, and Spectrum was working with NYPD to find the perpetrators. (via Gothamist)
