STATEWIDE — THE “CREEP” ACT, which has passed the state Senate but is stalled in the Assembly’s Judiciary Committee, is getting a boost from a group of over 30 celebrities, stalking survivors and other public figures.
The coalition, which includes activist Gloria Steinem; musician RZA; actress and model Anouska De Georgiou, who was the first British woman to allege sexual abuse at the hands of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell; chef Travis Lett; and former Rep. Jamaal Bowman, sent a letter to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie urging the passage of the “Ceasing Repeated and Extremely Egregious Predatory Behavior” Act (the CREEP Act/ A3226A).
This bill would give professed stalking victims access to civil orders of protection regardless of whether they have a close relationship with their alleged stalker, allowing for protection against coworkers, acquaintances, fans, strangers and online trolls. It would also cover tech-facilitated abuse, such as public disclosure of confidential information and cyberstalking. New York is one of seven states that still limits orders of civil protection.
Several Brooklyn assemblymembers are cosponsors. Mayor Zohran Mamdani had also cosponsored the CREEP Act during his time in the Assembly.
