WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. SEN. CHUCK SCHUMER said on Thursday he has introduced legislation to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision allowing the Trump administration to strip TPS from hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants. The decision opens the door for their deportation. “America should not turn its back on people who came here seeking safety,” Schumer said in a statement.
Also on Thursday, Rep. Yvette Clarke, co-chair of the Haiti Caucus who represents Central Brooklyn, joined roughly a dozen elected representatives and immigrant advocacy groups in a protest outside the U.S. Supreme Court after its ruling.
“It’s clear now that this legislative body must seize back the power that our increasingly unequal branches have stolen, and that must start with action to protect the hundreds of thousands of TPS holders whose lives depend upon it,” she said in a release.
