SHEEPSHEAD BAY — The Blessing of the Fleet, an annual ceremony that officially opens the sailing season for recreational boaters, will be hosted by Rockaway Point Yacht Club on the afternoon of June 28.
The more than 60 boat flotilla, which will be sailing in and around Sheepshead Bay, will include four local boat and yacht clubs: Miramar Yacht Club, Sheepshead Bay YC, Varuna Boat Club and Rockaway Point. Clergy will bless all lead boats and mariners for a safe boating season. The event will include a celebratory gathering at Rockaway Point.
The Rockaway Point Yacht Club, a private boating and social club at the western end of the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, serves as a marina and a gathering place for local boaters, fishers and residents. The club operates as a nonprofit social and recreational club, and it has approximately 135 marina slips, accommodating a range of recreational vessels.
Rockaway Point has previously participated in events for wounded veterans and boating programs for children through partnerships with community organizations and the National Park Service.
