BED-STUY – A CITY-OWNED SITE on Fulton Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant will be converted into a 100%-affordable housing complex, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Department of Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Dina Levy and Department of Social Services Commissioner Erin Dalton announced on Thursday.
This spring and summer, HPD and the Human Resources Administration will lead a community engagement process on development at the Fulton-Howard West site, which includes the former P.S. 28 school building, the adjacent track and open space, and neighboring vacant land owned by the city. The project will deliver hundreds of homes and community amenities, the city said.
The building, which is in significant disrepair, is currently being used by the Bedford-Stuyvesant Multi-Service Center, which houses organizations that provide homelessness prevention services; education, arts and social justice programming; and mentorship programs. The city has committed to ensuring these groups can continue to operate throughout the project, and will help them relocate into new spaces within the completed development once construction finishes.
This is the first public site engagement initiative launched under the Mamdani administration and builds on its efforts to accelerate affordable housing production on public land.
