WASHINGTON D.C. — A WAR POWERS RESOLUTION to halt military action in Iran passed in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday morning by a 214-208 vote.
Four Republicans — Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Warren Davidson — joined the Democrats in the vote which, though non-binding, reflects a strong rebuke to President Donald Trump from his own party over the war. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican who represents southwestern Brooklyn, voted against the resolution. All Democrats representing Brooklyn voted for the resolution.
Trump initiated the war on Feb. 28 without seeking Congressional approval, though the Constitution assigns the power to declare and fund war solely to Congress. The House voted after a ceasefire failed and the bodies of four servicemembers killed in the conflict were brought home.
