MANHATTAN – DURING A VISIT to the U.S. by British King Charles and Queen Camilla this week, the queen is set to present a doll of “Winnie-the-Pooh” character Roo to the New York Public Library, marking the centenary of the first book’s publishing, according to the BBC.
The doll is a replica that will complete a set of toys once owned by the original Christopher Robin, the son of author A. A. Milne, which inspired the classic children’s stories.
The toys were brought to the U.S. from England in the 1940s, then donated to the library by publisher E. P. Dutton in 1987. Winnie, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet and Kanga have been on public display ever since, barring the occasional professional conservation treatment, but Roo’s original was “lost in an apple orchard in the 1930s,” according to the library.
The presentation will take place on Wednesday afternoon, following the royal couple’s visit to the 9/11 Memorial.
