WASHINGTON, DC — TWO NEW YORK REPUBLICANS, one from Brooklyn, joined Thursday’s bipartisan vote in favor of extending Temporary Protected Status for Haitian migrants through 2029, dealing a major rebuke to President Donald Trump’s immigration and deportation policy.
NPR reports the final vote was split 224-204, although Brooklyn Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-09, indicated in a statement on Thursday that the vote was 220-207. Ultimately, 10 Republicans and one independent, Rep. Kevin Kiley of California, voted for the TPS extension.
The other Democrats from the Brooklyn delegation (Districts 7-11) voting aye were Reps. Nydia Velazquez, Hakeem Jeffries and Dan Goldman.
Republicans voting with Democrats were Reps. Nicole Malliotakis and Mike Lawler of New York; Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania); Don Bacon (Nebraska); Maria Elvira Salazar, Carlos Gimenez and Mario Diaz-Balart (Florida); Mike Turner and Mike Carey (Ohio); and Rich McCormick (Georgia).
Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Democrat of Massachusetts, forced the vote via discharge petition, in which it can bypass a House Speaker trying to block or kill it. The discharge petition reached the requisite 218 signatures. It still faces hurdles in the Senate and a likely Presidential veto.
