WASHINGTON, D.C. — THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES on Thursday advanced a bipartisan discharge petition to extend Temporary Status Protections to Haitian nationals. Central Brooklyn Rep. Yvette Clarke, co-chair of the Haiti Caucus with Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley, applauded the progress, calling it “historic.” Clarke, whose district includes a section of Brooklyn known as “Little Haiti,” called on the Senate “to act with the same urgency” to pass the legislation.
“This vote of 220-207 brings us closer than ever to extending TPS to Haitian nationals for three years — sending a powerful message and long-overdue victory for Haitian families and communities across this nation,” Ckarke said in a statement.
The bill was also strongly backed by Long Island Democrat Rep. Laura Gillen and Hudson Valley Republican Rep. Mike Lawler.
