CITYWIDE – THE CITY’S PUBLIC schools are set to reopen on Tuesday after Winter Storm Hernando passes, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Monday afternoon. School buses will operate as normal.
Schools were fully closed on Monday, after the state granted a waiver from the statewide minimum school day requirement in the face of the hazardous weather conditions. At 3 p.m. when the mayor issued a press statement, Hernando had dropped between 16 and 24 inches of snow across the city, with snowfall set to continue through the afternoon.
“Over 8,000 facilities staff … continue to prepare school buildings for safe use tomorrow, including removing snow and ice, checking heating systems and backup power readiness and confirming that emergency supplies are in place,” Mamdani wrote.
