MANHATTAN — FEDERAL OFFICIALS are keeping a Brooklyn man in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security put a stay on his release, even after an immigration judge granted bail, Spectrum News NY1 reported.
Allan Marrero has been detained since November 2025 after attending a green card interview at 26 Federal Plaza. His husband, Matthew Marrero, says the couple has been separated for nearly three months now.
DHS said Marrero overstayed a tourist visa and missed a 2022 hearing that triggered a removal order — a hearing the couple insists they were never notified about; the judge set bail at $6,000 before the stay kept him held in Natchez, Miss. DHS did not provide a reason for the stay.
Dan Goldman said of the immigration crackdown, “This is becoming the civil rights issue of our era.” The couple’s legal team is weighing next steps, including a new green card application.
