LOS ANGELES – JOURNALIST DON LEMON was arrested in Los Angeles on Friday in connection with a protest at a Minnesota church earlier in January, which Lemon had covered for his independent YouTube show, according to the Associated Press.
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the arrest in a statement, and described the protest as a “coordinated attack.” At the time, on Jan. 18, opponents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement had interrupted a service at Cities Church in St. Paul, where a local ICE official serves as a pastor, out of anger over the shooting death of protester Renee Good. The Justice Department has launched a civil rights investigation into the protest.
An attorney for Lemon said the Brooklyn College alum had no connection with the protest’s organizers and was engaging in constitutionally protected journalistic activity at the time, interviewing both protesters and worshippers.
“Instead of investigating the federal agents who killed two peaceful Minnesota protesters, the Trump Justice Department is devoting its time, attention and resources to this arrest, and that is the real indictment of wrongdoing in this case,” the attorney said.
