CITYWIDE — NEW YORK CITY’S PUBLIC POOLS FINALLY OPENED THIS SATURDAY, June 27, marking the 90th anniversary of the opening of 11 Works Progress Administration-era Olympic-size pools.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura celebrated the pools’ opening by jumping into the water with local families at Thomas Jefferson Pool in East Harlem on Saturday morning, the day after the last day of school for public school students.
The city’s free outdoor pools are open from now through Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a break for cleaning between 3 and 4 p.m.
Unfortunately for Red Hook residents, the opening of Red Hook Pool near IKEA has been delayed due to mechanical issues. NYC Parks aims to reopen the pool later this summer — more information is available at nyc.gov/parks/outdoor-pools or by calling 311.
