MANHATTAN – STATE PROSECUTORS ON Wednesday, Jan. 28, requested a July trial date for Luigi Mangione, accused of the high-profile shooting of health insurance executive Brian Thompson in December of 2024, the New York Times reports. Justice Gregory Carro was asked for a ruling on admissible evidence. Mangione faces a second-degree murder charge in the state courts, along with nine other counts, and is currently held in Sunset Park’s Metropolitan Detention Center. He pleaded not guilty.
Jury selection in Mangione’s concurrent federal trial, in which the Justice Department is seeking the death penalty, is scheduled to start in September, potentially creating an overlap in the proceedings.
Federal District Court judge Margaret Garnett said she would likely rule on Mangione’s death penalty charge this week.
