CITYWIDE — SUBWAY CRIME FELL nearly 25% year-over-year through November, driven by declines in robberies, felony assaults and grand larcenies, according to data presented by the NYPD Transit Bureau at a Metropolitan Transportation Authority board meeting.
Police reported 168 major felonies systemwide in November, down from 222 a year earlier, while year-to-date major crime declined 5.5% overall.
NYPD Deputy Chief of Transit Keith Shine attributed the reduction to sustained enforcement and patrol efforts across the system. However, riders interviewed by News 12 said the statistics do not reflect their lived experience, pointing to persistent disorder and high-profile violent incidents, including a fatal October attack at the Jay Street-MetroTech station in Downtown Brooklyn.
Hate crimes in the transit system declined 17% overall, though anti-Jewish incidents rose year-over-year and accounted for nearly half of reported bias crimes, according to the same NYPD report.
