CARROLL GARDENS — AS IT CELEBRATES ITS 175TH ANNIVERSARY, ST PAUL’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH starts a new tradition with its Annual Pie Baking Contest, taking place on Saturday, April 26. People from all ages around the neighborhood are welcome to enter. Pies can be sweet or savory, fruit or custard. A special children’s award will be presented for homemade pies in the under age 10 category. There is also a Youth 11-16 category and an adult category. Pies can be dropped off at 3 p.m. The judging, award and photos take place at 4 p.m. The entry admission is a donation of a canned good or other unexpired, non-perishable pantry item that will benefit the St. Ann’s Food Pantry. Tickets will be available for pie slices for a nominal donation following the judging presentation. As part of the festivities, St. Paul’s parish will also hold a Mother’s Day card making workshop for children and parents from 3-4 p.m.
Noted church architect Richard Upjohn, who was on the vestry, designed the present St. Paul’s building at Clinton and Carroll Street. The building opened in 1869 but parish leaders waited until the loans were paid in full before consecrating it. The pie contest and festivities will take place in Cullen Hall, built in 1867 and named for Father Peter Cullen, who was the rector of St. Paul’s for 30 years.

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view.”

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — ‘A miracle that no one was killed …’ That’s what neighbors are saying about the collapse of the Hotel St. George marquee.
