CROWN HEIGHTS — AFTER FOUR YEARS OF FIGHTING for significant repairs to their apartment building, tenants at 1616 President Street got $250,000 in rent waived, according to Prism. Their previous landlord, Jason Korn, was listed as the worst landlord in NYC in 2019 and 2020 by the Office of the Public Advocate, for violations across his 55 city properties. The tenants cited rent-impairing violations to ask for deferral as long as the building has issues that breach conservation code. A judge in December decided to void the rent due between 2020-2022, the period when Korn owed the building. Resident leader Vincia Barber, however, says that new owner Gillman Management has failed to rectify the building’s problems, and says she will continue to fight for full repairs.
The tenants were supported by local organizations like the Tenant Rights Coalition at Legal Services NYC and Housing Organizers for People Empowerment (HOPE).
