GOWANUS — The Young Lawyers Section, a dedicated group within the Brooklyn Bar Association (BBA) focusing on supporting younger attorneys, recently had a number of them cast aside fundamental legal principles for a more primal practice: tossing axes.
On the evening of May 22, The Young Lawyers congregated at Kick Axe Throwing on 622 Degraw Street for a night of friendly competition, quality conversation and networking.
The brainchild of the ax-throwing idea, Jean-Luc LeGrand, Esq., came up with it simply as a way to blow off some steam.
“As a young attorney, I know how frustrating our profession can be,” LeGrand explained. “It seemed like a good idea. I’ve never thrown an ax in my entire life, but I feel I’m doing OK today, and I’m having a really good time.”
Young Lawyers Section chair Angie Khawly, Esq., told the Brooklyn Eagle that when LeGrand mentioned the idea to her, she was all in favor of it.
“I was like, oh, my God, yes, let’s do it!” she said, adding that “it’s so important to have a bridge between the older, more seasoned attorneys, and the younger ones — the new generation.”
Khawly pointed out that her goal is to attract the younger generation of lawyers and provide them with the knowledge and tools of mentorship that the BBA can offer.
“We want to help to amplify their skills, and of course, have a space where they feel supported — where they can utilize their creative mind,” she underscored.
Dan Antonelli, Esq., former chair of the Young Lawyers Section, was also in attendance at the Gowanas gathering. Currently, Antonelli is the BBA’s first vice president, and as of June 1, he will be its president-elect.
“It’s so great to see the next class of attorneys coming up, developing and moving on,” Antonelli said. “The fact of the matter is, if you don’t bring new people in, our legacy dies.”
The Young Lawyers Section offers resources like Continuing Legal Education, mentoring and opportunities for networking and professional development.
It also encourages a new generation of leadership within the Bar, providing a platform for young lawyers to engage with the larger legal community and advocate for their interests.
Membership in the Young Lawyers Section is open to all attorneys as well as law students who have been admitted within the past 10 years.

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view.”
