CANARSIE — The MTA on Friday introduced new turnstiles and fencing at the Rockaway Parkway L train station to curb fare evasion, requiring all riders, including bus-to-subway transfers, to swipe or tap, according to News 12.
The change addresses a design flaw allowing fare skipping, which cost the MTA $700 million systemwide in 2022: a side entrance nearby the bus dropoff area at the station was open to the street, allowing anyone to easily stroll in without paying. Free transfers remain available via the new entry point.
While some passengers expressed support for the new gates, others were upset at the loss of the unintended “free $.99” ticket.
