CROWN HEIGHTS — SPORTS NONPROFIT ASPHALT GREEN announced on Friday it has signed an additional agreement to operate and manage a state-of-the-art turf field at the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, beginning April 1, according to a press release.
Last year, the Economic Development Corp. and BFC Partners — the real estate development firm that operates the community center — announced that Asphalt Green would also be taking over operations of the fitness center there from Boys Club of New York beginning Feb. 1. Under this additional agreement to operate the turf field, Asphalt Green will deliver youth sports leagues, clinics, adult recreational programs and fitness initiatives at the community center, located at the former Bedford-Union Armory.
In addition to the field and fitness center, the Carey Gabay Recreation Center at the site includes basketball courts, operated by New Heights Youth, Inc., and a six-lane, 25-yard swimming pool, operated by Imagine Swimming.
The recreation center was named in honor of Carey Gabay, assistant counsel to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Empire State Development, who lost his life in 2015 in a shooting during a predawn celebration associated with the West Indian American Day Parade.
