DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE CINEMA laid off 40 workers from its Downtown Brooklyn City Point theaters on Monday, part of a nationwide wave of layoffs at the chain that also claimed the jobs of 30 additional employees in other New York City locations. The layoffs came as a shock to employees, who were in the midst of contract negotiations with their union, NYC Alamo United. The theater chain stated that the layoffs were the result of predicted low revenues in the rest of 2025, although employees claim that Alamo did not provide evidence of this.
“It’s a really stupid business decision that already is impacting the quality of service in this theater and all of the Alamos that got cut across the country,” said Vice President of United Auto Workers Local 2179 William Bobrowski, speaking on behalf of the Alamo union to BK Reader. “Hopefully they’ll see the light.”
The union was negotiating for improved health and safety practices, consistent work shifts and additional staff. A newly-formed independent mutual aid group is offering assistance to the laid-off workers. Alamo owner Sony Pictures Entertainment did not comment on the situation to BK Reader.
