THE LEDE: Happy Monday, Brooklyn! Some NYCHA residents are living with no heat, a Greenpoint restaurant run by a “Top Chef” alumnus closes, and the dog rescued from an East New York garbage bag is set to start a new life with loving owners. Plus, America added 148,000 jobs in December, a 34-year-old man in Michigan molests a woman sleeping on a plane, and David Letterman’s first guest on his new Netflix series will be Barack Obama. Finally, we go inside President Trump’s “insane White House,” we share the top 10 international airports, and a pilot leaves the cockpit mid-flight after slapping his co-pilot. Have a great week.
IMPRINT: Mary J. Blige and Tom Hanks embrace on the most recent coverof W Magazine.

~DOG RESCUED FROM GARBAGE NOW WALKING, DISCHARGED FROM ANIMAL HOSPITAL: It’s a blessing in disguise. Saint Vincent, the dog who was rescued from a trash bag in East New York on Dec. 19, is recovering well and was discharged from the Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group on Fridayafternoon. More than two weeks after the incident, Saint Vincent has regained some of his personality and energy and is set to start a new life with loving owners. The 10- to 12-year-old shepherd-mix male canine is walking again, albeit with a limp, and left for his transitory home. New York Bully Crew, a nonprofit that helps animals in need, will temporarily house Saint Vincent while the rescue organization carefully combs through adoption applications. “Our job now is to continue the healing process that VERG put into motion and to ensure a continuous safe environment for Saint Vincent to flourish and find the perfect home for him to finally settle into and receive unconditional love and nurturing,” Founder of New York Bully Crew Craig Fields said. ~NYCHA RESIDENTS LIVING WITHOUT HEAT IN SEVERE COLD: With the bomb cyclone and Thursday’s winter storm bringing nearly single-digit temperatures, some New York City Housing Authority residents have been living without heat or hot water for more than a week. “The folks who work at NYCHA are trying to hold together something that really should’ve gotten investment a long time ago,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “Notwithstanding that reality, each time we’ve got to get the heat back on and we’ve got to take whatever extraordinary actions will allow us to get the heat back on.” Although heat was restored in multiple developments, including the Tilden Houses, Pink Houses and Rutland Towers in Brooklyn on Thursday, new heat outages continued to come up throughout the city. ~GREENPOINT ‘TOP CHEF’ RESTAURANT CLOSES WITHOUT NOTICE:Less than a year of being open under Top Chef alumnus Sam Talbot,Greenpoint’s Pretty Southern has closed without notice. The owner of the building between Lorimer Street and Manhattan Avenue said the restaurant closed in the fall and Talbot isn’t leasing the space anymore. The restaurant posted on social media in October that it would be temporarily closed until Nov. 10 to “make improvements to the restaurant,” but it never reopened, and no more statements were given. The spot served up Southern comfort food with gluten-free variations of fried chicken, biscuits and mac and cheese, focusing on a vegan and allergy-friendly approach to Southern cuisine. ~GOLDEN SUPPORTS CUOMO’S CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION BILL: Gov.Andrew Cuomo signed a bill on Tuesday that will establish a temporary New York State Commission to study child abuse prevention and make recommendations for the implementation of child abuse prevention programs in New York state, Brooklyn state Sen. Marty Golden and Westchester Assemblymember Sandy Galef announced. “I am proud to have worked with my colleague, Assemblywoman Sandy Galef, to sponsor this legislation which is now New York state law,” Golden said. “I thank Gov. Andrew Cuomo for signing this bill because New York state must take a stand against child abuse and increase prevention opportunities.” Child abuse and neglect have been rising across New York, and more resources are being expended to treat the consequences, including incarceration, court costs and foster care. A study by Prevent Child Abuse New York estimated these costs to be approximately $2.4 billion each year, while the amount spent on primary prevention is more than $30 million. Prevention programs, while proven effective, are currently only available to a small number of families at risk of abuse and neglect. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park.
