ROCKAWAY BEACH — MULTIPLE SHARK SIGHTINGS ALONG BEACHES IN QUEENS AND WESTERN LONG ISLAND have prompted intermittent closures in the vicinity, according to a Notify NYC alert issued at 12:51 p.m. on Thursday. The alert warns swimmers and beachgoers to exercise vigilance and caution.
News 12 Brooklyn also reported that a nine-foot shark was sighted at Point Lookout near Hempstead around 10 a.m. Another “marine animal” sighting was reported near the Rockaways, one off Beach 144th Street and another off Beach 30 Street in Far Rockaway, CBS said. Google Maps show that Manhattan Beach (near Kingsborough Community College) and Coney Island each sit within 11 miles of Rockaway Beach.
Thursday was not the first time sharks have been sighted near the city’s southern beaches. Rockaway Beach. Last July 4, drone videos captured sharks swimming in that vicinity, ABC7 New York reported at the time. Sharks are known to patrol large areas, sometimes covering 50 miles in a day, according to the Institute for Environmental Research and Education. Food availability is a factor in sharks’ migration.
