BOERUM HILL – THE LANDMARKS PRESERVATION Commission on Tuesday approved the landmarking of the former Public School 15 Annex building at 372 Schermerhorn St. by unanimous vote, according to Brownstoner.
The 1889 red-brick Romanesque Revival building was deemed significant both for its ornate architecture and its history. The structure originally served as an extension to the neighboring P.S. 15, then became a continuation school for women and immigrants in the 1920s and 1930s. It later served as a Department of Education child psychology clinic, a business school and the home of the dual language Arabic-English Khalil Gibran International Academy.
The site was originally set to be included in a surrounding redevelopment project. Builder Alloy now plans to integrate the facade of the original P.S. 15 building and to “adaptively reuse” the Annex, which is largely intact.
