RED HOOK — CITY COUNCILMEMBER ALEXA AVILÉS is conducting a survey of residents and neighbors regarding a proposed rezoning at 46 Nelson St. in Red Hook, a site currently occupied by a low-rise commercial building. The proposal could change the current manufacturing zoning on two adjacent lots to allow for a 7-story mixed-use building with roughly 96 new housing units (25% affordable), ground-floor commercial space and 36 parking spaces.
Avilés says the feedback will help inform her review (through Feb. 25), as the application moves through the land use process.
District 38’s residents face some of the highest displacement risk in the city, according to Avilés, who has published Land Use Principles to guide development. These include the creation of “truly affordable” housing; addressing climate change; investing in community-serving uses, infrastructure, and jobs; and preserving and growing the industrial sector.

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park.
