MANHATTAN – FORMER CITY COMPTROLLER Brad Lander is set to appear in court on Thursday, following his Sept. 18 arrest at a sit-in protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement at 26 Federal Plaza, a courthouse and detention facility. The sit-in was organized by 11 elected officials to protest the Department of Homeland Security’s detention of immigrants at immigration court proceedings.
According to an announcement from Lander, he has requested a trial in order to pursue legal discovery and “shed light on” conditions detainees face at that facility. Supporters plan to gather outside the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York before the hearing for a rally, and then to observe the court proceedings.
The rally is set for Thursday, Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m., while the hearing begins at 2 p.m.
