ALBANY — STATE LAWMAKERS LOOK to slow New York’s AI data-center boom, as bipartisan concern grows over electricity costs, grid strain and limited job creation tied to the facilities powering artificial intelligence, TechCrunch reports.
State Sen. Liz Krueger introduced legislation imposing a three-year moratorium on approvals for new data centers exceeding 20 megawatts, pending environmental review and regulations to prevent higher energy rates. Assemblymember Anna Kelles sponsored a companion bill in the assembly. Supporters say the pause would give the state time to assess impacts as energy-hungry facilities proliferate nationwide.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has promoted AI investment while backing requirements that large users bring or fund their own power. But opposition spans parties and states, with similar proposals emerging from Vermont to Oklahoma and criticism that the benefits of AI — including profits for firms like Nvidia — have not translated into broad economic gains.
The bills would place New York at the forefront of a national reckoning over AI’s energy footprint as lawmakers balance innovation against rising costs.
