BENSONHURST — DURING A TIME of diplomatic tension among nations, students in Brooklyn are demonstrating how music can unite the world. Students at St. Athanasius Catholic Academy in Bensonhurst will celebrate World of Music on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The celebration is part of Catholic Schools Week in a diocese known for its many ethnic cultures.
Students from pre-K through eighth grade will sing, dance and play instruments like tambourines and maracas, sharing music from different countries representing the school’s cultural diversity. Among the performances will be a pre-K class performing a Chinese dragon dance, a kindergarten class representing Africa with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” a second-grade class honoring Italy with the Tarantella, a third-grade class representing Mexico with “La Bamba” and a fifth-grade class honoring Ireland with “An Irish Lullaby.” France, Austria, Colombia and other countries and cultures will also be represented. Later on Tuesday, the school will offer its Culture and Heritage family engagement night.
“Our students will share music from countries around the world, reminding us of the beauty and uniqueness of every person created in the image and likeness of God,” said St. Athanasius Academy’s principal, Gina Auricchio. “Through these performances, we come together as one community – rooted in faith, united in love, and strengthened by our differences.”
