BENSONHURST — FOLLOWING THE DETENTION by ICE of a beloved church deacon within her district, Councilmember Susan Zhuang, D-43, organized a rally set to happen Friday morning, Jan. 16, in his support, according to a press release from Zhuang’s office.
Zhuang said that the deacon, whose name she didn’t disclose, has served the church in Council District 43 for many decades and has no violent criminal history. He was reportedly detained for lacking legal immigration status.
Councilmember Zhuang, Bensonhurst pastor Eric Salgado, and community leaders were set to convene at 1770 Bay Ridge Parkway at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, to demand that federal representatives act swiftly against immigration enforcement officers. They will also protest the federal administration’s recent halt on immigrant visa processing from 75 countries, “simply due to being deemed a ‘public charge,’” she asserts.
Zhuang, herself an immigrant from China, points out that there is “evidence of immigrants (undocumented and documented) contributing more to public benefits than they ever receive.”
