ALBANY — GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL signed legislation Friday requiring social media platforms with certain allegedly predatory features to display warning labels alerting young users to potential mental health risks.
The bill, S4505/A5346, applies to platforms that use features such as infinite scroll, autoplay or addictive feeds. These platforms must now show unskippable warnings when a young user first engages with these features, and periodically thereafter.
Hochul said the law is aimed at increasing transparency and protecting children from excessive social media use, citing research showing higher risks of anxiety, depression and negative body image in adolescent heavy users.
