CAPITOL HILL — BROOKLYN CONGRESSMEMBER DAN GOLDMAN, D-10, IS AMONG SEVERAL who believe that the American public should hear the testimony of former Special Counsel Jack Smith regarding the events of Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol.
The Associated Press reported that Smith testified for several hours in a closed-door meeting with the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, although according to reports he wanted his deposition to be public. Smith was answering questions regarding investigations into President Trump’s first-term action over election interference and the Jan. 6 attack at the Capitol.
Goldman, one of 19 Democrats sitting on the committee, is among those demanding Smith’s testimony and his full report on the investigation be made public. “The American people should hear for themselves,” he said.
Goldman and ranking member Jamie Raskin, D-Maryland, believe that House Republicans are motivated to keep the testimony private regarding the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when Trump supporters denying his loss in the November 2020 election stormed the capitol, attempting to disrupt the vote certification and peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden. The attack led to five deaths and multiple injuries.
