PROSPECT HEIGHTS — BROOKLYN MUSEUM WORKERS hope to avoid anticipated layoffs, as museum management on Monday agreed to offer severance and retirement packages, according to staff union District Council 37. The museum reportedly faces a $10 million deficit, prompting major planned staff cuts that have led to weeks of protests and public hearings, Hyperallergic reports.
Negotiations remain ongoing, and it is unclear how many of the layoffs might still occur. Museum Director Anne Pasternak previously said the cuts were unavoidable, citing lagging city funding and high union wages.
Union leader Henry Garrido called the buyouts “a testament to the power of union representation.” The Brooklyn Museum has not yet confirmed the agreement’s details.
