The arts and sciences were under one roof on Thursday, January 22 as the Brooklyn Streetcar Artists’ Group (BSAG) brought its Autumns Past exhibition of fine art, to Coney Island Hospital.
The exhibit highlighted at the opening reception features works from several different artists belonging to the BSAG, a group whose mission is to “create opportunities for artists and art lovers of all ages.” The group also doubles as a non-for-profit organization and is part of the 501 (c) (3) non-profit Brooklyn City Streetcar Company, Inc.
“It went very well,” said Arthur Melnick, executive director of BSAG, about Thursday’s opening. “We have about 20 active artists, we have members who’ve been with us forever, since day one, and we have some who come and go.”
The group has come a long way since its first exhibition in 2007. BSAG now has a gallery space available at Coney Island Hospital that provides for an ongoing series of exhibitions. This is something that the hospital’s staff says helps to uplift the environment for patients, according to BSAG’s website.
“We are the only viable artists group in all of Southern Brooklyn,” added Melnick. “The others you’ll find are basically clubs. We’re looking to spread through southern Brooklyn as well as showing our artists any place.”
The exhibition, held on the second floor of the hospital’s main building, will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 18.

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view.”

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — ‘A miracle that no one was killed …’ That’s what neighbors are saying about the collapse of the Hotel St. George marquee. Shown in this photograph are workmen beginning the removal and repair of the historic, old neon sign at the corner, referencing a relic of Brooklyn Heights’ past: the St. George Hotel.
