
Eastern Parkway joins Atlantic Avenue and McGuinness Boulevard in being designated an Arterial Slow Zone (ASZ) by the city Department of Transportation (DOT), as part of the larger Vision Zero initiative.
This means that drivers and pedestrians will see reduced speed limitsdown from 30 mph to 25mphrecalibrated signal timing to reduce incidents of speeding, more blue-and-white speed limit signs, temporary speed boards, and increased traffic enforcement by NYPD.The new signs and speed limits will go into effect in June.DOT statistics report that Eastern Parkway saw 15 fatalities since 2008 in traffic-related accidents. Arterial streets only make up 15 percent of the citys streets, but account for around 60 percent of pedestrian fatalities.The 3.9-mile-long major boulevard runs parallel to Atlantic Avenue and stretches from Plaza Street East at Grand Army Plaza to Bushwick Avenue at the Bushwick/Brownsville border.
