Two men tried to take their own lives by jumping off the Verrazano Bridge this week.
On Tuesday, September 24 at 11 a.m., a 62-year-old male was on the edge of the Staten Island-bound upper roadway. Police Officers Vlad Green and Frank Gigliotti, along with Detective Nicholas Scianna and an officer from the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, began to speak with him while they waited for the Hostage Negotiation Team to arrive.Once he was at the scene, Lieutenant Jack Cambria, the Hostage Negotiation Team coordinator, was able to convince the man to come in voluntarily from the edge of the bridge. The officers from the Emergency Services Unit, also at the scene, secured the man in a harness and brought him to safety. He was then brought to Lutheran Medical Center, without any injuries, for evaluation.But another man was not so lucky.On Sunday, September 22, a 29-year-old man jumped off the bridge and survived the plunge, but later died at Staten Island University Hospital.
